The Third Force Behind Motion
Sir Oliver Lodge, Russell writes, had already said that force and motion are not enough to complete a logical universe. Some third intangible must stand behind them, and it might turn out to be something already familiar. Russell names that third principle sex. Force and motion cannot continue without it. To call Mind the motive power behind them is only a generality. Sex is the specific attribute by which Mind controls both.
Sex is the apparent division of the father-mother substance of Mind into opposites. That split comes from the contrary desires of electricity and magnetism in the action and reaction of thinking. It is the active desire for separability into two, and equally the reactive desire for union of the apparent two into one. Mind, being One, cannot actually yield to division. The desire for two produces only an appearance of two. The desire for unity produces only an apparent composite of the two.
Sex is of all things from the beginning, and it begins when light begins. It is the desire for the appearance of being, which is the appearance of existence. Nothing can be without the desire to be. Desire dominates thinking and matter, and all desire is sex desire: the continuance of existence in the orderliness of existence. Sex force is what carries one impulse of thinking into the next. It is periodic, and that periodicity builds the complexity of idea out of a simple beginning, and the appearance of many things out of the reality of one thing.
Variance of sex is the father of the desire to create the idea of many things. Remove the image-making faculty of that father-force and the production of idea would stop. The desire for unity is the mother of reproduction. Remove that mother-force and idea would not be repeated. Matter cannot keep the appearance of form without the desire to continue it, and the substance of Mind cannot evade materializing into the form Mind desires. Russell calls this an immutable law.
He rejects the idea that sex starts with organic life or with a temperature range. Sex, life, light, and intelligence are in all things from the beginning. Granite and a bar of iron have the principle as much as man does. The star Argo, blazing at thirty thousand degrees, knows it in its fiery heart and cannot continue its appearance without it. The Martian ice cap knows it in its frozen depths and retains its appearance because of it.
Sex is therefore the electromagnetic equalizer of matter in motion: the apparent division of one force into electricity and magnetism, positive and negative, which are only two pulsations of the one force. All things are both male and female. Creation is first male in preponderance, then similarly female. Light units are first male-female, then female-male. Opposites will not remain opposed. When inequality grows too great, inherent Oneness asserts itself as dissatisfaction. Sex is unsatisfied when the forces are unequal and satisfied when they are equal. A lightning flash is that power equalizing two unequally charged storm clouds.
